A pochi minuti dalla morte di Whitney Houston i prezzi dei suoi album su iTunes si erano già impennati: la scelta è oggetto di critica.
A seguito della morte di Whitney Houston, il prezzo dei suoi album su iTunes si sarebbero improvvisamente impennati. La mossa è stata registrata da alcuni utenti i quali avrebbero presto portato online il proprio sconcerto per quella che, anche e soprattutto in considerazione della tempistica, viene considerata come una mossa speculativa di dubbio tatto.
Il mercato, insomma, ha presto recitato il proprio addio alla cantante per poi passare all’azione: prezzo al rialzo per le opere della Houston, con l’elaborazione del lutto che nell’ambiente è tradotta in doverosa monetizzazione pur lasciando spazio ad evidenti interrogativi in termini di opportunismo ed etica.

Mentre il mondo celebra le ultime note della cantante, la polemica tira in ballo tanto Apple quanto la Sony, casa discografica ricollegata agli album oggetto della critica. La “Ultimate Collection”, ad esempio, sarebbe stata portata da 4,99 a 7,99 sterline nel giro di pochi minuti, impedendo peraltro il download agli utenti durante le fasi di update del prezzo. Una verifica in queste ore indica il prezzo del medesimo album a quota 5,99 euro.
Sebbene in un primo momento siano stati in molti a puntare il dito contro Apple per il repentino cambio dei prezzi, in realtà la responsabilità sulla scelta sarebbe da accreditare alla Sony Music, la quale avrebbe deciso di cambiare strategicamente il listino nella consapevolezza dell’impennata che avrebbero avuto le vendite nelle ore dell’emozione successiva alla caduta della stella di “The bodyguard”.
Occorre tuttavia ricordare come non tutti i cambi di listino siano imputabili ad una scelta precisa: il semplice aumento della popolarità di un brano può imputare l’automatico aumento del costo, il tutto sulla base di quanto stabilito nel contratto tra Apple e le major. Così facendo le etichette si tutelano per casi in cui non sia soltanto una nuova hit a spopolare, ma (come in questo caso) circostanze particolari rendano vecchi brani degli improvvisi successi di ritorno.
Per la Sony trattasi peraltro di un cambio di sicuro impatto economico: il brano “I will always love you” è immediatamente tornato anche in Italia al secondo posto nella classifica tra i più scaricati su iTunes (soltanto “Ai se eu te pego” resiste al ritorno della vecchia hit), mentre tra gli album la Houston piazza tanto “Ultimate Collection” quanto “Greatest Hits” e “The Bodyguard” nella top ten.
Pochi euro di differenza possono significare in queste ore milioni e milioni di introito aggiuntivo. The show, del resto, must go on.
